The Role of the Spirit:

Knowing the Truth of All Things

O how great the holiness of our God! For he knoweth all things, and there is not anything save he knows it.

—2 Nephi 9:20

Our deliberate efforts to feel and follow the promptings of the Spirit inch us closer to the Lord. As we seek to understand the ways in which the Spirit communicates to us as individuals, we progress in becoming like the Lord. As we take the Spirit as our guide, we are led to choose the Lord rather than Satan. Every time we feel and recognize the Spirit in our lives, we come to know and feel God’s love more directly and powerfully, which gives us a greater sense of His love and an increased desire to be gathered in to Him and to those who love Him. This fills the ache of our spiritual homesickness through a familiar sense of love and peace in our hearts, a feeling known in our premortal lives. On the other hand, if we are apathetic or indifferent, we have in essence chosen the adversary. Often we forget that failure to act or choose is itself a choice.

The key to continual growth and change is to plot a course that includes abandoning the lies of the adversary. Throughout any given day we can choose to act to invite the Spirit into our lives more powerfully.

Our Need for the Spirit

The scriptures and prophets teach us that we need the Spirit because He tells the truth and doesn’t lie. Learning to recognize the influence and workings of the Spirit in our lives is one of the most significant duties we can perform and master in mortality. The Spirit is the great destroyer of darkness. Understanding and distinguishing promptings, feelings, thoughts, and personal direction can be difficult. But given adequate heed and work, we can become versed in the language of the Spirit. The Holy Ghost will lead us, guide us, walk beside us, and help us find our way.1

As the third member of the Godhead, the Holy Ghost does not have a body. He is a personage of spirit, whose companionship is a gift bestowed on newly baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As we choose to receive Him,2 He testifies of Christ and His prophets. It is our privilege to have Him with us when we are worthy. His various roles include cleansing and purifying us as we become sanctified. He verifies truth, knows all things, and leads us to know what is to come in our future.3

The scriptures teach us that we know the Spirit is operating in our lives when we feel “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, [and] temperance” (Galatians 5:22–23). I most often experience the fruits of the Spirit after I have responded to His nudges. Sometimes, the Spirit will push me out of my comfort zone and can even—at first—make me feel uncomfortable before ultimately bolstering and supporting me.
